Norwegian Aqua to Offer Short Bahamas Cruises from Miami Starting 2028

Norwegian Aqua to Launch Short Bahamas Cruises from Miami in 2028

Norwegian Cruise Line has confirmed that the Norwegian Aqua will begin operating short three- and four-night cruises to the Bahamas from April 2028, marking the ship's first foray into the short-cruise market and giving travellers a quick, accessible way to experience a Bahamas getaway.

Itinerary and Departure Details

As part of Norwegian's newly announced 2028 deployment plans, the 2025-built Norwegian Aqua will sail these short Bahamas itineraries from PortMiami throughout the summer season. The ship will first complete a winter season sailing out of Port Canaveral before repositioning to South Florida for the remainder of the year.

The short cruise schedule is built around two options: three-night weekend cruises departing Miami every Friday, and four-night cruises departing every Monday. Both itineraries call at Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian's private island destination in the Bahamas, while the longer four-night sailings also include a full day cruising through the Florida Straits.

Major Upgrades Coming to Great Stirrup Cay

Norwegian has placed particular emphasis on Great Stirrup Cay, which is currently undergoing a significant redevelopment ahead of the 2028 season. The private island's enhancement project includes the addition of the Great Tides Waterpark, along with a new pier that will allow guests to disembark directly from the ship without tendering.

Additional upgrades include Horizon Park, featuring lawn-style games and pickleball courts, and Hammock Bay, a relaxation zone offering more than 50 hammocks for guests to unwind. These additions are designed to significantly enhance the private island cruise experience for short-break travellers.

In total, the 3,571-passenger Norwegian Aqua is scheduled to operate more than 50 short Bahamas sailings between late April and late October 2028 — a strong option for travellers seeking a quick cruise getaway without committing to a full week at sea.

Norwegian Aura Joins Miami's 2028 Lineup

Norwegian's 2028 Miami-based summer season will also introduce the Norwegian Aura, a new 170,000-ton vessel entering service in 2027. The ship will operate seven-night Eastern Caribbean cruises from PortMiami, with a regular rotation calling at Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, Charlotte Amalie in St. Thomas, and Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. Like the Norwegian Aqua, the Aura will also call at Great Stirrup Cay on every sailing before returning to Miami.

Broader Florida and Gulf Coast Deployment

Rounding out Norwegian's 2028 Florida deployment, the Norwegian Escape will sail from Port Canaveral for the summer season, while the Norwegian Prima will operate from Galveston, Texas — reinforcing Norwegian's continued expansion across multiple U.S. Gulf and Atlantic coast homeports.

Why This Matters for Travellers

Short Bahamas cruises have long been a popular entry point for first-time cruisers, and the addition of a newer, larger ship like the Norwegian Aqua — paired with a significantly upgraded private island — makes this an appealing option for guests seeking a premium short cruise experience without a lengthy time commitment. With over 50 sailings planned across the season, availability is expected to move quickly for peak weekend departures.
