Carnival Cruise Line Completes First-Ever Solar Eclipse Cruise, Three More Set for 2027

Carnival Cruise Line has successfully completed its first dedicated solar eclipse cruise, giving guests a rare front-row seat to a total solar eclipse from the open ocean — and the cruise line has confirmed three more eclipse voyages will follow in 2027.

Carnival Legend's Historic Eclipse Sailing

The milestone voyage was an 11-day Carnival Journeys itinerary aboard the Carnival Legend, which set sail on 9 August from Dover, England, calling at ports across Spain, Portugal, Belgium and France. The sailing's defining moment came on 12 August, while the ship was positioned at sea directly in the path of the eclipse's shadow.

Guests were issued specialised eclipse-viewing glasses and gathered on deck to watch the moon fully obscure the sun, experiencing a total solar eclipse from a vantage point unavailable to land-based viewers. The cruise line rounded out the occasion with themed entertainment, curated onboard beverage offerings and dedicated eclipse programming throughout the sailing.

Carnival has positioned the voyage as an extension of its Carnival Journeys collection — longer, experience-led itineraries built to give travellers extended time in port as well as standout moments at sea.

Three Solar Eclipse Cruises Confirmed for 2027

Building on the success of this debut sailing, Carnival has announced three further eclipse-focused voyages scheduled for 2027:

  • Carnival Firenze — South America Eclipse Cruise: A 16-day Carnival Journeys sailing departs Buenos Aires, Argentina on 2 February 2027, timed for a solar eclipse on 6 February. The itinerary includes calls at Rio de Janeiro and Maceió in Brazil, along with Grenada, Martinique and St. Maarten.
  • Carnival Sunshine — Mediterranean Eclipse Cruise: A 10-day Mediterranean voyage departs Barcelona, Spain on 25 July 2027, positioned for an eclipse on 2 August.
  • Carnival Miracle — Europe Eclipse Cruise: An 11-day Carnival Journeys sailing departs Dover, England on 29 July 2027, featuring a dedicated sea day built around eclipse viewing.

Why Eclipse Cruises Are Gaining Popularity

Solar eclipse cruises have become an increasingly popular niche within experiential travel, offering guests a mobile viewing platform that can be positioned precisely within the path of totality — something land-based eclipse tourism often can't guarantee due to weather or overcrowding at popular viewing sites. For cruise lines, eclipse sailings also provide a distinctive marketing hook that appeals to both astronomy enthusiasts and travellers seeking a once-in-a-lifetime onboard experience.

With three more eclipse voyages already confirmed for 2027 across South America, the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, Carnival appears set to make eclipse cruising a recurring feature of its Carnival Journeys programme.
